Acropoli of Populonia Archaeological Field School

2 settimane 3 giorni ago

This Archaeology Summer School takes place in the scenic medieval castle of Populonia, overlooking the Gulf of Baratti and the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago. Once a prominent Etruscan and Roman city, the site is located in the heart of Tuscany, near Florence, Pisa, and Siena, within the Archaeological Park of Baratti and Populonia.

The Summer School will be repeated in two sessions: 19-31 May 2025 and 2-13 June 2025. In both cases the registration deadline is 4 April 2025.

Each session features hands-on fieeldwork in archaeological excavation, creation of scientific documentation (graphic, photographic, and written), and a ceramics workshop using finds from the excavations.
Lectures cover topics such as stratigraphy, the historical and cultural context of the site, material culture, and include educational visits to local museums and archaeological sites.
All activities are led by professional staff involved in the University of Pisa’s ongoing investigations on the Acropolis of Populonia, with participation from Italian students to foster collaboration and exchange.
At the conclusion of the program, participants will complete a final assessment on the knowledge and skills acquired, which will contribute to their overall evaluation.

Participants will stay in a guesthouse managed by the Ministry of Culture within the Archaeological Park of Baratti and Populonia.
The guesthouse is equipped with a kitchen, shared bedrooms and bathrooms, and laundry facilities. Food will be provided via grocery deliveries, with participants responsible for preparing their own meals. Participants should provide a certificate or self-declaration of any food allergies or intolerances.

Participant's personal requirements and mandatory equipment (each participant must provide independently):

  • Tetanus vaccination certificate
  • Medical certificate of good health or fitness for work
  • Safety clothing, including reinforced-toe safety shoes and durable work trousers (long trousers)
  • Personal trowel and work gloves (optional)

The Summer School will be held on campus in Località Baratti, Piombino (Livorno), at Parco Archeologico di Baratti e Populonia.

Aim

The aim of Summer School is the acquisition of knowledge on archaeological research in the study of the ancient world, practicing the stratigraphy method and the drafting of scientific documentation in the field.
Our scientific goal is to gather archaeological data on Roman structures located on the Acropolis hill of the ancient Etruscan and Roman city of Populonia.
The site holds significant archaeological interest, featuring cultural artifacts from the Iron Age settlement of Fufluna/Pupluna, Roman walls on the Acropolis, temples, and other structures. Systematic research has been ongoing since the 1980s, with investigations in the sacred area revealing at least three temples surrounding the Roman forum. Recently, the University of Pisa uncovered a Roman thermal bath complex in the area.

Modern Wavefunction Based Methods in Electronic Structure Theory

2 mesi ago

The Summer School "Modern Wavefunction Based Methods in Electronic Structure Theory" (MWM25) is directed towards highly motivated PhD students and postdocs who want to deepen their knowledge in the field of ab initio electronic structure theory.

In the recent past, wavefunction based ab initio methods have received revived interest in the theoretical chemistry community. It is generally recognized that these methods provide a systematic, accurate and transparent route towards solving the molecular Schrödinger equation to high precision. For a long time the high computational cost that is characteristic of these methods has precluded their large-scale application in chemistry. However, modern algorithms, modern hardware and reduced scaling approaches have drastically changed this situation and led to a widespread use of wavefunction based methods in computational chemistry.
The physical basis of wavefunction based methods involves an elaborate apparatus of advanced mathematical and physical concepts that is frequently beyond a typical university curriculum. Hence, in order to be able to do research in this field, it is necessary that young researchers get familiar with these concepts. The MWM25 school is aiming at filling this gap by providing lectures and tutorials that are designed to introduce the students to the advanced concepts of ab initio electronic structure theory. Furthermore, the school will provide ample opportunity for discussion between the participants, teachers and tutors in which specialized and research-oriented questions can be addressed.

The school is at its fourth edition, the first two editions (2016 and 2018) having been held in Gelsenkirchen, Germany, and the third in Pisa, at the department of Chemistry and Industrial Chemistry of the University.

The Summer School will be held on campus in Pisa, in Pisa, at Centro Congressi Le Benedettine, Piazza San Paolo a Ripa D'Arno, 16.

Aim

The Summer School "Modern Wavefunction Based Methods in Electronic Structure Theory" (MWM25) aims at providing an overview of the main ab-initio theoretical methods in moder quantum chemistry.
The school covers the following topics with lectures from leading experts in the field:

  • Mathematical foundations of Quantum Chemistry
  • Second Quantization
  • Algorithm Design
  • Coupled Cluster Theory (Ground States)
  • Coupled Cluster Theory (Equation of Motion)
  • Derivative Techniques
  • Magnetic Properties
  • Multiconfigurational Self-Consistent Field
  • Multireference Dynamic Correlation Methods
  • Relativistic Quantum Chemistry
  • Modern approaches to electron correlation (DMRG, Stochasticnapproaches, …)
  • Local Correlation Approaches
  • Resonance States

The school further offers tutorials on a selection of topics, where the students are divided in small groups, each led by a tutor, and given various exercises that aim at giving them a more practical overview of such topics.

Two poster sessions and two Clinic sections are also organized, to give the students the possibility of interacting among themselves and with the lecturers and tutors in a more informal environment.

Gallicano Field School in Medieval Archaeology and Bioarchaeology

2 mesi ago

The Gallicano Field School in Medieval Archaeology and Bioarchaeology offers students a unique opportunity to engage in archaeological and bioarchaeological fieldwork. The program is centered around excavations at the Pieve di San Cassiano site in Gallicano, a municipality located approximately 20 miles north of Lucca, Tuscany, Italy.
The Pieve di San Cassiano dates back to the early Middle Ages, though its exact foundation date remains uncertain. It was once a prominent religious center in the Serchio Valley, overseeing 23 churches. Following the Black Death in 1348, the Pieve gradually declined until its complete abandonment in the 15th century. Today, the site, nestled within a wooded area, offers a well-preserved archaeological context, including the remains of the church, outbuildings, fortifications, and extensive cemetery areas.
Previous excavations in 2024 uncovered an imposing medieval building (11th-13th century) measuring 24 meters long by 18 meters wide, with three naves and three apses. Significant cemetery phases were also identified in the churchyard and behind the apses. Additionally, the remains of an earlier medieval building with stone burials were discovered.
The 2025 excavation campaign will focus on further exploring the medieval and early medieval contexts, including the cemetery areas and the structures of the church and annexed buildings.

Aim

This Summer School is part of a broader academic project led by the Division of Palaeopathology at the University of Pisa. This project aims to investigate the biocultural complexity of the region surrounding Lucca during the Middle Ages. Specific objectives include:

  • Excavation and analysis of the medieval cemetery, focusing on demography, burial characteristics, and funerary rituals.
  • Bioarchaeological analysis of the medieval population, including biodiversity, paleopathology, and activity markers.
  • Reconstruction of the settlement's evolution from the late antique period to the modern age.
  • Analysis of the material culture of the religious center, with emphasis on commercial dynamics, economic activities, and the dissemination of technical knowledge related to the site's life.

Beyond academic research, the project seeks to foster public engagement in archaeology. This involves involving the local community in archaeological research and implementing effective practices for sharing findings with the broader public, particularly regarding the significance of medieval human remains for contemporary society.
The Gallicano Field School provides students with a valuable opportunity to gain hands-on experience in archaeological excavation and bioarchaeological investigation under the guidance of leading researchers.
Participants will learn about archaeological field methods, including survey, excavation, GIS, informatics, bioarchaeological techniques, skeletal remains handling, and material culture analysis. The program combines fieldwork with laboratory activities and lectures on archaeological theory and practice.

Prognostication in the Middle Ages: Philosophical Strategies to Deal with Uncertainties

3 mesi 1 settimana ago
The Winter School "Prognostication in the Middle Ages: Philosophical Strategies to Deal with Uncertainties", organized by prof. Stefano Perfetti (University of Pisa), is part of a co-research initiative within a PRIN PNRR (Research Project of National Interest, funded by the Italian Ministry of University and Research). The project focuses on "Social, Political, and Religious Prognostication and its Roots: Philosophical Strategies for Coping with Uncertainties and Planning the Future", prot. P2022BMJ5A.    The scientific committee of the school includes the heads of the affiliated units from various Italian universities (Florence, Foggia, IMT-Lucca, Naples l'Orientale, Pisa, Siena, and Trento).   The invited speakers, who are independent of the PRIN units, are prominent scholars in the field of Medieval Prognostication. They include (in alphabetical order):
  • Lisa Devriese (KU-Leuven);

The sessions will explore the notion of prognostication and its connections with dreams, prophecy, astral signs, determinism and contingent futures, medicine, physiognomy, politics, and social uncertainty.   Students whishing to earn 5 ECTS credits must submit a written report on a topic agreed with the coordinator by March 10, 2025.   The Winter School will be held on campus, in Pisa, at Palazzo Boilleau, via Santa Maria, 85. Aim

The main goal of the Winter School is to offer young scholars a platform for discussion, dialogue, and training in an international research environment, hosted by the University of Pisa.

The School aims to showcase the latest developments in the study of medieval methods for predicting or modeling the future. These include conjunction astrology, geomancy, prophecy, medicine, and their connections to political events and eschatological expectations. These topics will be explored from a multicultural perspective, examining various medieval linguistic and religious contexts.

Who can apply

The Winter School is open to PhD students, early career researchers, and master degree students in philosophical, historical, and literary disciplines who wish to experience a full-time program of training and discussion within an international scientific context.
